U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is coming to Lincoln’s Zoo School Thursday at noon.  The stop in Lincoln is part of her “Rethink School” tour, which started Tuesday in Wyoming.

Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Joel was asked by KFOR News  if he had 5 minutes with Secretary DeVos, what would he tell her.  He said it would be using public funds to promote privatization in Nebraska.  He said Nebraska school officials don’t want to see that happen here, nor do they think it’s necessary.

“That seems to be going in the wrong direction,” Joel said.  “Most of the country is trying to catch up with Nebraska. Why would we want to weaken a system that has proven to be effective?”

Dr. Joel added that high graduation rates, high college going rates, good act scores make Nebraska stand out nationwide.

“But what we offer is a statewide model that works and is effective,” he said.

Joel says Secretary DeVos insisted on seeing science focus programs to show choice is alive and doing well in this country.
