FOOTBALL: Southeast Outlasts East in the Trenches

Class A No. 7 Lincoln Southeast won the battle in the trenches against Lincoln East’s rugged line on Friday night.

The Knights’ offensive line allowed running back Nick Halleen and quarterback Shadon Shannon to score touchdowns to earn a 28-6 win over the Spartans at Seacrest Field, in a game that was heard on ESPN Lincoln FM101.5/1480AM.

Seniors Xavier Trevino (a Nebraska walk-on commit), Carter West, Tristan Allen and Carson Stoner, along with junior Jacob Bergonia created running room for Halleen to run the ball 21 times for 219 yards and a touchdown.  His touchdown came on a 38-yard run to put Southeast up 14-0 at halftime.  Shannon’s touchdown on a quarterback sneak play on the first drive of the game gave the Knights the initial lead.

One of the biggest runs for Halleen came on a 49-yard spurt before halftime that was helped by his Southeast offensive line that pushed him an extra 25 yards past mid-field, while refusing to be tackled.

Shannon’s second 1-yard scoring run in the third quarter capped an 85-yard drive, aided by Halleen’s 44-yard run.  Then Isaac Gifford scored the final Southeast touchdown, when he broke free for a 29-yard touchdown.  The Knights finished with 323 yards rushing in the game.

East (2-2) avoided the shutout with less than a minute play in the game, when DeKendrick McCray made a one-handed catch on a 33-yard toss from Noah Walters.  That set up running back Edward Lankas’ 6-yard touchdown run with 17 seconds to play.
