HUSKER FOOTBALL: Prep Starts For Nebraska’s Season Opener With UTEP.
A good week of practice last week for the Nebraska football team as they head into final preparation this week for the season opener against U-TEP. On Friday, Husker head coach Matt Rhule talked about the quarterback situation in determining who the starter would be. He explained why true freshman Dylan Raiola (RY-ola) got the nod to start.
“Dylan puts all the pieces in play. And that doesn’t mean all the other guys (Heinrich Haarberg, Danny Kaelin and Northwestern College transfer Jalyn Gramstad) don’t,” Rhule said. “Dylan has elite arm strength. He understands all the run game checks. He understands the entire RPO game. He understands situational football.”
As for Haarberg?
“I think in fairness to Heinrich, I just have so much respect for him as a competitor. He can go out and do anything,” Rhule added.
Rhule adds all the quarterbacks have worked really hard during fall camp and could be utilized. He emphasized the team needs to have another good week of practice.
“It’s a challenge this week, even as you watch UTEP personnel,” Rhule said. You might be watching an Eastern Kentucky player then you’re watching a UTEP player, then you’re watching an Austin Peay player you might be watching a player from Florida state as you prepare, personnel-wise. And then as you’re watching Austin Peay’s film you’re trying to extrapolate it back to the players they have, so there’s a lot of work to be done.”
Nebraska and UTEP kickoff the 2024 season Saturday at 2:30pm on Fox. A reminder to join us on KFOR’s social media pages, YouTube and kfornow.com for the Real Red Reaction Show after the game at approximately 6pm.
