Lincoln Man Taken to Jail for Drunkenly Stealing, Wrecking Car

An Lincoln man is in jail after stealing a vehicle and a firearm, then crashing that vehicle head-on Monday afternoon on 70th Street.

Lincoln police say 35-year-old Matthew Hammers was drunk when he stole a shotgun and a pick-up from a residence near 84th and Holdrege. Shortly afterwards, LPD responded to an injury crash near 70th and Huntington, where Hammers had crashed the truck with a city dump truck.

Hammers had to be rescued out of the vehicle since he sustained minor injuries. Officers located opened and empty beer cans in the truck as well as a loaded syringe.

Hammers was arrested an cited for theft by unlawful taking, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person.  Additional charges may be also be forthcoming, including felony DUI charges, depending on the results of the blood draw, and possession of a controlled substance, depending on the results of the lab analysis of the syringe flush.
