LSO Investigating Two Different Fraud Cases
LINCOLN–(KFOR Aug. 23)–Two fraud cases are being investigated by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
The first one was reported by a 68-year-old Firth woman on Wednesday, where she had a window pop up on her computer from what appeared to be Microsoft Support that contained a phone number. It said there was a suspicious transfer of $7,000 from her bank account. According to Chief Deputy Ben Houchin, the scammer apparently told the victim to take $7,000 out of her account and transfer it to Bitcoin, which she did and lost the money. The scammer kept calling the woman, who quit answering.
In another case reported this week, Houchin on Friday said a man in southwest Lancaster County met who he thought was a woman on a dating app. Their conversation continued on Snapchat, where he allegedly sent some explicit photos and soon finds out it’s not a woman he’s talking to and the scammers tried to get money out of him. Houchin says the man didn’t send any money and quit communicating with them.
