More Americans Losing Vision

(KFOR NEWS  February 5, 2020)  A study by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, vision loss or impairment in working adults between the ages of 18 and 64 is responsible for an estimated $23.8 billion dollars in lost productivity annually.  Estimated total economic burden attributable to eye disorders and vision loss is $139 billion.

The Nebraska Optometric Association (NOA) and the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry encourage Nebraska employers to make 2020 the Year of Your Eye Exam by signing the 2020 Nebraska Employer Pledge, indicating their commitment to employee eye health by encouraging employees to get their annual, in-person comprehensive eye examination.

Vision and eye problems are increasing as America ages. 90 million Americans over age 40 have vision and eye problems. According to the American Optometric Association and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, by 2050 without effective interventions, the following conditions will increase:

  • Diabetic retinopathy 72%

  • Cataracts 87%

  • Glaucoma 100%

  • Age-related macular degeneration 100%

  • Vision impairment & blindness 150%
