Names of Victim, Suspect Released in Weekend Stabbing Death

LINCOLN–(KFOR May 20)–Lincoln Police have identified the two teens involved in a deadly stabbing late Saturday night at a home near 64th and Adams.

Assistant Chief Jason Stille on Monday said the victim is 16-year-old Xavian Sawyer, who was a student at Lincoln East High School.  LPS’ Crisis Response Team members were going to be at East for students that may be impacted by the news.

The suspect, 14-year-old Stephen Damore who is a student at Culler Middle School, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony.  The Lancaster County Attorney’s Office will likely have determine if the 14-year-old suspect will be prosecuted as an adult.

KFOR News asked Stille on what led up to the stabbing.

“We believe this was the boiling over of a fight that took place earlier and we are still trying to track that down,” Stille said.  He indicated there may have been a disagreement at a different location.

Police say Sawyer apparently suffered stab wounds, at least two.  One to the chest and another below that area.

Police did recover several knives and Stille says they don’t believe the victim was armed.  He did confirm there were a few adults at the scene, but at what point of time they were at the home is not clear.

No other suspects are being sought but police are asking for any other witnesses who may have video of the incident or any information about what happened, to contact them at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
