NWU MEN’S BASKETBALL: Schimonitz’ 32 Helps P-Wolves Win Thompson Classic Over Wisconsin-Superior
SUPERIOR, Wis. – Nate Schimonitz scored a game-high 32 points, missing only four field goal attempts on the night as he led 8th-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan to an easy 87-51 victory at University of Wisconsin-Superior in the championship game of the Merrill Thompson Classic on Saturday night (Nov. 9).
NWU opens the season with a 2-0 weekend in Wisconsin, thanks in part to the solid play of their senior point guard Schimonitz who scored 58 points on the weekend.
The Prairie Wolves led 39-25 at halftime, then just like they did on Friday night against 12th-ranked Saint John’s, Nebraska Wesleyan came out firing in the second half. NWU outscored the Yellow Jackets 48-26 in the second half, shooting an amazing 67.9 percent from the field. UW-Superior made only 33.3 percent of their shot attempts in the final 20 minutes.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets hung right with the Prairie Wolves and had the game tied at 17-17. NWU ended the half on a 22-8 run to break open the game.
Schimonitz was the story of the game with a very impressive stat line. After posting a double-double on Friday, Schimonitz went 14-18 from the field to score his 32 points. He added seven rebounds and led the team with six assists.
Two other NWU players reached double figures in scoring. Clay Reimers just missed a double-double scoring 12 points with a team-high nine rebounds. Reimers was 5-8 from the field. Nate Bahe scored 11 points on the night.
NWU ended the game shooting 54.8 percent from the field, but did struggle from long range making 8-25 on their 3-point attempts. The NWU 3-2 defense proved effective once again forcing 20 total UW-Superior turnovers.
Nebraska Wesleyan now prepares to make their home debut next weekend when they play a pair of games against NCAA III schools from the state of Texas.
