Suspicious Envelope Found Monday at Secretary of State’s Office

LINCOLN–(KFOR Sept. 16)–A suspicious envelope was found during routine mail collection Monday morning by the Secretary of State’s Election Division.

According to a news release from Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen’s office, the unopened envelope was isolated in a separate area of the office and staff contacted the Nebraska State Patrol. Lincoln Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department also responded.

Authorities identified a substance in the envelope, which was tested and determined to be non-hazardous. That envelope and contents will be turned over to the FBI and Postal Service officials. No one was harmed.

“The situation was quickly and safely resolved thanks to the swift action taken by our staff members, law enforcement and other first responders,” Secretary Evnen said in a statement.

The Elections Division has notified county election offices advising them to be aware of suspicious mail and to use extra precaution.
