Ted Carter, who the University of Nebraska Board of Regents designated as their Priority Candidate for President last Friday, says he’s excited at the chance to motivate students. The leading candidate to head the University of Nebraska System says he considers students to be the customers, and their graduation is the number one job for instructors and administrators. ” We have to offer programs to our youth for the jobs that are going to be there in the next 25 to 30 to 50 years” Carter said, while adding that many of the major areas of study that are important today don’t have familiar names such as machine learning, AI science, data learning and data management, .

He also said the University of Nebraska’s organization as a Land Grant Institution is one of its important distinguishing features saying “that its part of the personality that needs to be maintained now more than ever.”

Carter recently ended five years as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, and says he believes the needs of the University of Nebraska are a good fit for the skills he offers. He will hold numerous public meetings at each Campus of the University and also around the state over the coming month. The Board of Regents designated him Friday as their leading candidate to head the N-U System, but plan to vote at the end of the 30 day period on whether to offer him the job.
