Wyuka Officials Cut Ribbon for Installation of Pershing Center Mural Project

LINCOLN–(KFOR Oct. 10)–Ribbon was cut today Thursday morning on the first phase of the $2.3-million pond renovation and stormwater runoff project at Wyuka Park and Cemetery.

The second phase will include the installation of the Pershing Center mural on a retaining wall that will serve as a backdrop to a pond in the south section near 35th and “O” Street.

The mural will be formed horizontally and raised to a vertical position on which the 140′ x 38′ mosaic, made up of 763,000 square-inch ceramic tile.

In addition, a 3-D tactile model of the Pershing Mural will be created, allowing access to the blind/those individuals with low vision, to appreciate its composition.  The 110-ton mural will become one of the largest free-standing mosaic murals in the world.

Of the $4.1-million needed to raise for the mural project, about $1.4-million needs to be raised.

Wyuka facilities director Greg Osborn says work the second phase of the project toward putting up the mural could start in late spring or early summer of 2025.  There are four total phases of renovation set for Wyuka.
