FOOTBALL: Class B Top-Ranked Skutt Survives Scare From No. 3 Waverly
WAVERLY–(KLMS Oct. 11)–Omaha Skutt knew going in to Waverly they were in for a tough game from a highly touted Viking offense and defense.
The Class B No. 1 Sky Hawks relied on senior quarterback and Husker recruit Tyson Gordon for a 10-yard touchdown run in double-overtime to survive with a 28-21 victory over the No. 3 Vikings Friday night at Viking Stadium. In the game heard on ESPN Lincoln FM101.5/1480AM, it was Skutt’s 20th-straight win going back to the 2018 state title run and improved this season’s mark to 7-0.
Gordon’s touchdown in double-overtime was the fourth he scored in the game. He had scoring runs of 3, 54 and 2-yards prior.
Waverly (6-1) struck immediately in the first quarter, when quarterback Mason Nieman broke free for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play of the game. The Vikings had a good chance to keep control, when Barrett Skrobecki blocked a punt but penalties forced the drive to stall.
Gordon scored on a 3-yard run on the next Skutt drive of 80 yards to tie the game. He then scored on a 54-yard run in the second quarter to give the Sky Hawks a 14-7 lead.
Waverly’s Treyton Kozal recovered a Skutt fumble early in the third quarter. Nieman scored on the next Viking drive from six yards out to tie the game.
Skutt took control 21-14 in the first overtime, but Nieman found Evan Canoyer on a 6-yard pass to tie the game again and forced a second OT.
Nieman ran 25 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns, while Gordon with his four TDs had 25 carries for 137 yards.
