BOYS DISTRICT BASKETBALL: Omaha Central Shuts Down Lincoln Pius X to Claim A-6 Championship

LINCOLN–(KFOR Feb. 27)–Defensive pressure from Omaha Central contributed to 21 Lincoln Pius X turnovers, as the Eagles were able to hold off the Thunderbolts 63-49 Tuesday night at Flavin Gym to win the A-6 boys district basketball championship.

Central moves on to the NSAA Boys State Basketball Tournament with the automatic bid.  Pius X finishes the season at 18-6, after coming up short of an at-large bid.  The Thunderbolts needed to have Kearney win the A-7 tournament to get a wildcard berth to State, but the Bearcats lost to Gretna 65-63.

Central’s defensive pressure also caused fits for Pius X on offense, including 3-of-18 from three-point range and 6-10 center and North Dakota State commit Treyson Anderson only scoring 11 points but grabbed 13 rebounds in the losing effort.

The only time the Thunderbolts led was 7-6 in the first quarter and central took over by going on an 8-0 run thanks to Andrew Brown’s basket in the spurt.   The Eagles held on to an eight-point lead at halftime, 29-21.

Central (16-8) sprinted out to a 6-0 run to start the third quarter and Pius X could not find a way to bounce back the rest of the way.

Daleron Thomas had a game-high 14 points to lead the Eagles, while DJ Sterling scored 13 points and Devin Holmon finished with 11 points for Central.

Adam Searcey led Pius X with 12 points and Mike Haith scored 10 points in the loss.
