HUSKER FOOTBALL: Rhule Addresses Challenge With Fall Camp Workouts

LINCOLN–(NU Athletics Aug. 15)–Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with members of the media following Tuesday’s practice. Rhule addressed the challenges associated with fall camp and the future of the younger players on the team.

“The challenge with fall camp has been to not try to get through it, but to try and get better,” Rhule said. “On the flip side, there’s not many days lefts of practice before August 31st. We have to remain a very humble team, and if we want to be confident come game time, we have to earn it right now. I’ve never questioned this team’s work ethic, so far, it’s been pretty good.”

Rhule gave specifics on the younger players and how they might impact this upcoming season.

“I don’t know a lot about some of the younger kids until they actually play in the game,” he said. “I can see their talent, I can see what they’re going to be, I can see where they are right now and how they’ll transition into the potential to perform. I know we have at least six guys we can play with. I’d like to be at eight or nine, and I can see that the younger guys are really starting to improve.”

He also spoke about the scrimmage and the improvements he would like to see.

“My issues with the scrimmage was the procedure stuff,” Rhule said. “The pass-protecting was the best it’s ever been. We ran into a phase where we spent so much time getting reps and less time practicing getting off the sidelines and subbing off the sidelines. That was a little bit of a wake-up call, but again that’s all-procedure stuff. In terms of actual football, I thought it was good. I’m pleased with where we’re at. They’re right where they’re supposed to be. “

Rhule also spoke on his passion for red zone offense and defense, and what that will look like for this year.

“Our defense is pretty difficult in the red zone with what they allow you to do and with the way they play,” Rhule said. “I’ve been pleased with the way we’ve run the ball for the red zone. Our creativity has been pretty good, and I think we’re right where we need to be.”

The Huskers will return to the practice field on Wednesday.
